Sentencing on drug and weapon charges for Grammy Award-winning rap artist Lil Wayne has been delayed until the beginning of March so the performer can undergo dental work.
Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter Jr., was scheduled to be sentenced on February 9, but a Manhattan judge agreed to delay the proceeding so that he could undergo dental work in Miami, according to the Associated Press.
According to the AP, a lawyer for Lil Wayne said the performer needed to be treated for a “medical situation” that could not be addressed sooner since his dentist was away performing charity work. Lil Wayne’s new sentencing date is scheduled for March 2.
The charges for which the rapper faces sentencing date back to July 2007, when a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun was found on his tour bus. After pleading guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in October 2009, the popular performer faces up to a year behind bars.
Lil Wayne is also set to go on trial at the end of March on additional drug possession and weapons charges related to a January 2008 arrest in Arizona. He pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges after three guns, 105 grams of marijuana, 29 grams of cocaine, 41 grams of ecstasy and various drug paraphernalia were found on his tour bus during a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint. That trial is set for March 30.
